MediaCity 4 Proceedings
The MediaCity 4 proceedings document the research presented at the international conference, workshops, and exhibition held on May 3–5, 2013 at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York.
The volume gathers papers and project descriptions that explore emergent relations between urbanity and digital media, with attention to pluralities, globalities, and the conditions of non-Western, post-Capitalist, and turbulent cities.
The MediaCity 4 proceedings gather together the research and creative inquiries shared during the international conference, workshops, and exhibition hosted by the Center for Architecture and Situated Technologies. As a record of the fourth edition in the series, the volume reflects ongoing interest in how digital media reshapes contemporary urban life, paying particular attention to cities whose conditions are often overlooked in dominant design discourse. The collected contributions offer a situated view of architecture as both a reflective and responsive practice in an evolving media landscape. Organized around emergent relations between urbanity and digital media, the proceedings emphasize pluralities and globalities across diverse cultural and social formations. Contributors examine cities shaped by civic turbulence, post-Capitalist transitions, and non-Western contexts, considering how communications infrastructure, public space, and design practice intersect. Rather than treating these conditions as exceptions, the volume positions them as central to an expanded understanding of city life today. The publication extends the initiatives of the symposium into a lasting reference for students, faculty, and practitioners engaged with architecture, urbanism, and the situated technologies that mediate contemporary environments. By documenting methods, case studies, and theoretical reflections, the proceedings support continued inquiry into reflexive design practice, the entanglements of media and place, and the ways architecture can articulate responses to growth, migration, and shifting cultural lines.
