The Focus of MediaCity 4
MediaCity 4 examined pluralities and globalities of MediaCities. Its thematic focus included cities shaped by non-Western and post-Capitalist conditions, as well as cities experiencing civic turbulence.
The conference brought together questions of urbanity and digital media, creating a forum for research into cities whose conditions and relations extend across local, national, and international contexts.
MediaCity 4 was held May 3–5, 2013, at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York.

Situated technologies invite us to reconsider how digital tools shape and are shaped by the spaces people inhabit, blurring boundaries between architectural practice, urban life, and media. Rather than treating technology as an external layer applied to cities, this perspective suggests that communications infrastructures, sensing devices, and responsive materials actively participate in the formation of environments. Architecture becomes a method of inquiry into emergent entanglements, where questions of design overlap with questions of culture, society, and ecology. Workshops, exhibitions, and publications within this field open space for reflexive conversation among practitioners, students, and faculty, fostering an expanded understanding of how buildings, neighborhoods, and public realms might articulate new relations between people, media, and the contemporary city.
